The Church of Colossae was established by Epaphras. The city was located in Turkey in the region of Phrygia ,
in the Roman province of Asia some 1300 miles away from Rome. It was near Laodicea and Hierapolis 100 miles
east from the city of Ephesus.

The population of the city was made up mostly of Gentiles but it also had a large Jewish community. Because of
this Gentile and large Jewish population mixture, a unique form of heresy developed to threatened the
Colossian Church.

This heresy an amalgamation of pagan culture and Judaism. The pagan culture worshiped many gods: Isis, Serapis,
Helios, Demeter, and Artemis. The Jewish heresy came from the teachings of a sect of Judaism known as the Essene
Thus the Colossian heresy was a combination of false Greek philosophy, and Judaistic legalism and ceremonialism.

Greek philosophers regarded the message of the gospel as too simple, Jesus Christ wasn’t enough. To obtain salvation one had to have Jesus Christ + knowledge (visions supplied by angels)

Pauls letter to the Church at Colossae addresses all of the false teaching and false doctrine that was being introduced into the church at that time and in our time

False Heresy

The Colossian heresy denied the simplicity of the Gospel

The Colossian heresy denied the humanity of Christ

The Colossian heresy denied the sufficiency of Christ

The Colossian heresy taught that circumcision was necessary for salvation

The Colossian heresy advocated asceticism

The Colossian heresy encouraged the keeping of Jewish ceremonialism

Truth Taught By Paul

The simplicity of the Gospel is summarized in 1 Corinthians 15:4

Paul stresses that Jesus did become a man and has reconciled you in His fleshly body through death Col 1:22

Paul writes that All the fullness of Deity dwells in Christ in bodily form Col 2:9-10

Paul writes that In Christ you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands Col 3:11

Paul again addresses why asceticism has no part in salvation Col 2:20-23

Paul writes that ceremonialism was not necessary for salvation and not to be intimidated for not observing Col 2:16-17

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, (1 Corinthians 15:3-4 ESV)
